Gaming Mice – Why They Are Worth Every Penny

Introduction

I was recently looking through some of my old stuff after a move and came across one of my old gaming mice. It was a classic Logitech series that got discontinued a few years ago. It was a great wireless mouse that I even used on my PS4 a couple times. As I dusted it off, I remembered how much better of a gamer it made me just because it wasn’t a controller.

Controllers are hard to aim with if you’re playing a hardcore shooter like Call of Duty compared to a mouse. Gaming mice don’t have to be super fancy, but they definitely make it easier to aim and shoot with for a couple of reasons. Maybe you tried gaming with a mouse at a friends house or heard that they were a more preferred way of playing.

This article is really helpful for anyone who is looking at buying a gaming mouse who’s never had one before.

So why are gaming mice worth every penny?

Gaming mice are worth every penny because they are more accurate, durable, yet equally affordable than average computer mice. A gaming mouse allows you to fully customize every feature on it so you also get the most for your money.  This level of customization and responsiveness gives any player a significant advantage over a traditional mouse or controller.

Accuracy: The Biggest Reason You Should Give Up Your Controller

As mentioned earlier, using a controller isn’t a terrible thing. But if you’ve been playing games for a long time on a controller, you might notice that competitive shooters are still tricky to aim and shoot with. This is because flicking around an analog stick is less effective than using a mouse that can continuously scroll in any direction without any moments of crossing dead space.

The last thing you want to do is die early in a round of Fortnite because a player outmaneuvered you because you couldn’t put your reticle on his person fast enough.

  • Gaming mice are specifically engineered to have a higher dpi rating. In essence, this means that they react thousands of times more quickly to subtle and dramatic movements.
    .
  • Most office mice do not come with high dpi settings because there is no need for an average user to control a mouse with such sensitivity when doing data entry or just surfing on the web.
    .
  • Gamers partake in competitive online games, which requires a mouse to respond instantly to a players movement. Anything less disadvantages the player. Sometimes this makes all the difference.

Even though using a controller might seem like the best option for single player games, it’s still not as accurate as a dedicated gaming mouse.

Durability

Gaming mice are extremely durable and will pay for themselves over and over. If you take good care of it, you should only have to replace it if it becomes defective or damaged. In other words, if you don’t let it leave the realm of your mouse pad, you shouldn’t have an issue with its durability.

But Are Gaming Mice More Expensive?

The short answer is no, you can get a great gaming mouse for around the same price as a controller. A controller usually costs around $60 for Xbox or PS4. Using my own experience and some additional research, I’ve found that they best gaming mice to buy this year are around the same price range, but they also do way more for your performance than a controller ever will.

If you want the best possible gaming mouse because you play competitive, ranked matches, then you will likely want to purchase a higher end gaming mouse. The higher end mice usually cost around $100 to $150 but that’s because they’ve gone through extensive testing for accuracy and they’re programmed to be way more responsive than a recreational gamer could ask for. If you fit into this category, then you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

For non-professional gamers who still want a competitive edge, these are the top mice I would recommend:

Razer Mamba Elite

This is the gaming mouse that my brother uses on his PS4 to play COD, Destiny 2, and Fortnite and he absolutely loves it (more so than the standard PS4 controller!). Razer is another one of the hard hitters when it comes to high quality gaming mice. You can purchase this one as either being wired or wireless.

While lower end wireless gaming mice have latency issues, the Razer Mamba Elite will give you nothing to worry about. The response time on wireless razer moues products is unparalleled except by Logitech. The wireless version also comes with an outstanding battery life so you’ll never have to worry about it dying during an important match.

HyperX Pulsefire Surge

HyperX consistently comes out on the top five lists of gaming mice each year, and for good reason. They are a brand you can trust to make a quality product and their gaming mice won’t break the bank either.

The PulseFire Surge is built with a super simple design, has 16000 DPI sensors (that’s a lot!), and is even more affordable than an Xbox or PS4 controller. Even if you game on a console, this will greatly aid in your ability to shoot accurately. I did some additional research aside from my own experience using it and the only consistent con I found is that it’s not great for people who have exceptionally sweaty hands.

Corsair M65 Pro

Corsair M65 has been in the gaming industry for a long time so they also know how to make a good mouse. This model comes with 12,000 DPI sensors and is made from an ultra-lightweight material (the same lightweight aluminum they make airplanes with).

It comes with an extremely convenient weight tuning system that you can find underneath the mouse depending on how lightweight you want it to be. There’s a nifty sniper button on the side for when you’re aiming with a scope and don’t want to left click to shoot.

This mouse is extremely easy to customize when it comes to button settings and layout. When you plug it in to your PC, it display its CUE interface that allows you to select what you want each of the 8 programmable buttons to do (and much more).

The Best for Last: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum

If you do any additional research, you’ll find that the Logitech G5 Series always comes out on top.

I personally would make this one my top pick because I used one of their original models several years ago and am pleased to see they further enhanced their original design (Proteus Core) and came up with this one.

They kept all the features from the original model which made that mouse so great while improving it to be as top notch as all the newer models. The mouse has weight tuning just like the Corsair M65, but comes with a more advanced optical sensor and is just as responsive as all the other models. As always, Logitechs customization interface is super easy to use and you can adjust this mouse however you desire. And don’t forget, it has RGB lighting!

Logitech currently manufactures some of the most durable gaming mice. You can look at tons of reviews online or people talk about the durability of their products. Of all the research I have done, I have found this to be true myself. An average Logitech gaming mouse will last you 50 million clicks! That’s 30 million more than other competitive brands.

Gaming mice (Bluetooth and wired) also work on consoles  such as the PS5 or Xbox. Don’t think that just because you own a console that means you can’t use a gaming mouse. In fact, some of the best console players use a mouse instead of a controller.

  • Should I get an expensive mouse pad? No, gaming mouse pads serve the same function no matter what type of gaming mouse you have. There’s different textures but that’s personal preference. I’ve never spent more than $20-30 on a gaming mouse pad.
  • How much should I spend on gaming mice? I’ve always used gaming mice in the $60-80 price range. From the conversations I’ve had with avid gamer friends (some of which play ranked Rocket League games against the pros), they using gaming mice in the same budget range as well.

Purchasing a $130 gaming mouse isn’t going to make you a better player anymore than if you used a cheaper model. You’d have to be a serious pro to really get the most out of the high end mice. Most regular gamers won’t even notice the difference in the slight advantage to accuracy they provide.

One Last Interesting Case Study

When I was doing some of my own research on gaming mice, I found a really helpful video where this Youtuber plays Fortnite using a cheap, mid-range, and high end gaming mice just to see what the difference is in his performance.

It’s a quick video to watch if you have a few minutes and I linked to it because it helped me understand how powerful they can be (though I’m still perfectly happy with the $60 Logitech mouse I still have)..

Conclusion

You might think that a gaming mouse is going to be more expensive than a traditional one. But there are actually notable brands that offer exceptional affordability for great gaming mice products. While there are many expensive brands in this market, you don’t have to break the bank to get an affordable mouse.

The main distinction is that a gaming mouse will always be more accurate to use than a regular office one. It comes down to DPI settings and the fact that gaming mice go through more accuracy testing by the manufacturer before they’re released onto the market.
